Blues purists may
disagree, but you don’t need a name like “Willyboy” or be born in
Mississippi to play the blues. Everybody gets the blues from time
to time. London native, Amičl Houghton and Gerry Norris, from a
little west of there, met a dozen years ago at her first audition. She
was13. Since then, the two have collaborated, reinventing
themselves and their bands culminating in, The Dozens, a
non-traditional approach to traditional blues.

He's born
and bred in Windsor, Ontario, the city of roses and the automotive
capitol of Canada. His neighbours to the north in Detroit, Michigan
paved the way for what is rock and soul music today. Pat's brand of
music doesn't quite showcase the sound of Motown Detroit, but it's
got the soul and spirit to measure up. He doesn't tour with a band
or record with one. He prefers to keep the decisions and
performances up to himself, and he's still able to paint a landscape
with a song as if a hundred people had given their advice.
He's had a few pats on the back from respectable artists along the
way, too, including Peter Frampton, Sam Roberts, Matthew Good, The
Beach Boys & Bob Rock.

and “a
voice of tremendous power and whimsy”,
Toronto-based Rob Szabo is a tireless touring troubadour and an
acclaimed songwriter. His
music has been called “accessible
yet sophisticated acoustic pop”.
Szabo’s lyrics are beyond-heartfelt and have a "psst, did you know
that?” confessional air to them, prompting journalists to compare him to
Elliott
Smith,
for his emotional intimacy, and to “prime
Costello”
for his lyrical smarts.

►Stephen Fearing
Guelph

|
1/3
of Canada's Blackie & The Rodeo Kings
It has been 20 years since
songsmith Stephen Fearing released his self-titled debut. Over
the following two decades, he has built up a very loyal and committed
international audience, one sure to be delighted by his beautiful new
recording. Yellowjacket is Fearing’s eighth solo album and as
always it features a potent combination of powerful and affecting
lyrics, pure vocals and masterful musicianship. Yellowjacket also marks
something of a breakthrough in Stephen’s approach to recording as he
assumes the mantle of producer for the first time since his early
albums. The result is a relaxed fluency vocal and guitar work and a
unique sonic palette, which make this album distinctly different, again,
from his previous releases. |
